The Sunday before Christas we had twelve fencers show up. The twelve fencers
of Christmas, like the twelve days of Christmas? These are probably
the people that want body cords, blades and gloves in their stockings.
We did have a surprise participant, Coach Wang joined us. This makes two
weeks in a row that we had world class foil fencers join us. We
are making an impression, I guess if nothing else for being consistent.
The part that most amused me was watching Frank give Coach Wang epee lessons
before we started. My thinking was it should have been afterwards. I mean
she's a great fencer to start with and foil isn't all that different from epee.
The day started with Andrew and Ken facing off. Ken's experience was able
to get him to the next round. Everett and Jonah were next. They are both
in the same Boy Scout troop, so there were cheers for Boy Scouts, along with
Red Rock and the individuals. Filip faced Coach Wang and Coach Wang's olympic
training gave her the win. Michele and Ava were the last in the round and
and Michele was able to move up.
Libby and Ken started round two and Ken easily won the bout. Everett and
Greg were next with Everett's smooth moves beating the leaning tower of Greg.
Frank and Coach were next and Frank won but he had to fight for it. It
started off slow but Coach Want turned the heat on at the end but Frank had
the epee moves to win. Michele and Stephanie finished the round with Michele
moving past Stephanie, although it was the closest bout of the round.
Ken and Everett started the third round. Everett easily beat Ken. Frank
and Michele were the other bout and Frank also easily beat his opponent.
The final was Frank and Everett. Frank was thrilled to be in the final
and Everett looked pretty determined to win. In the end it was Everett's
determination that won over Frank's enthusiasm. I guess Everett's Christmas
present was getting to spend time with Pierre. He actually gets an extra
week as the winner since Red Rock is closed the Sunday after Christmas.
