Corporate Challenge 09

The fencing Corporate Challenge event was an amazing event. Fencers from all walks
of life, ages, genders, physical condition and skills gathered over four days to do
battle representing their work place. Twenty-three teams competed this year. It was
down from last year but still a good turnout for these economic times. Each night a
different division fenced off in direct elimination bouts.

The event was hosted by Red Rock Fencing Center. Frank Van Dyke the owner and head
coach runs a great event. Everyone was greeted at the door and directed to where to
sign up. Once the whole team showed up, the team was sent to get outfitted. At starting
time Frank explained the rules of the event as well as giving some guidance to the less
experienced fencers. The main rule was that everyone was there is have fun and enjoy
the sport of fencing.

NIGHT 1 - DIVISION C
Division C was the first night of fencing. Seven teams showed up to compete. The list
was comprised of Bechtel, Ninyo & Moore, AAA, Las Vegas Library District, Yucca Mountain,
Cheetahs, and VTN. Ninyo & Moore got a bye in the first round because of their standing
from last year. AAA and VTN were the first bout with VTN winning to go to the next round.
LV Library District was next against Bechtel. Bechtel defeated the LV Library District. Yucca
Mountain was next against Cheetahs. Yucca Mountain won and moved up. Round two saw Ninyo
& Moore defeat VTN. Bechtel then defeated Yucca Mountain. The final was Bechtel against
Ninyo & Moore with Bechtel taking the victory. There was a fence-off for third place
between VTN and Yucca Mountain with VTN taking the win.

NIGHT 2 - DIVISION B
Night two was Division B. Six teams made an appearance on the Wednesday night; IGT, NV DOC,
Aristocrat, Bally Tech, Republic and Las Vegas Valley Water District (LVVWD). Two teams had a bye
because of their wins from the year before, IGT and LVVWD. Aristocrat and Bally Tech went
first with Bally Tech squeaking past Aristocrat. NV DOC fenced Republic and NV DOC went
up to the next round. Round two started with IGT and Bally Tech facing off and in an
upset Bally moved up. NV DOC then dropped to LVVWD. Bally and LVVWD fought in the finals
with LVVWD taking the win. IGT and NV DOC fenced for third with NV DOC taking third.

NIGHT 3 - DIVISION A
Night three was Division A and the smallest of the events. Three teams showed up; Nellis AFB,
City of Las Vegas and NS Tec. With only three teams showing up Nellis AFB got a bye in the
first round. NS Tec and City of Las Vegas (CLV) fenced first with the City of Las Vegas winning.
Nellis then fenced CLV and Nellis took the win. With only three teams there was no fence-off
for third.

NIGHT 4 - DIVISION D
The final official night for Corporate Challenge was Friday. Seven teams showed up; Lionel Sawyer,
Rolf Jensen, Komol, GLI, MFO, Varian Medical and John Martin Engineers. Lionel Sawyer had a bye
the first round. Rolf Jensen fenced Komol with Komol taking the victory. GLI was next against MFO
with GLI winning to move on. Varian Medical fenced John Martin Engineers and JM Engineers moved up.
Round two began with Lionel Sawyer against Komol with Komol winning. GLI lost to JM Engineers.
The final round was Komol versus JM Engineers with the Engineers winning. Lionel Sawyer fenced
against GLI for third place with GLI winning.

NIGHT 5 - FINALS
Saturday night was not an official Corporate Challenge event but was sponsored by Red Rock Fencing
Center. It was the night that the finalists from each division fenced to be the all division winner.
Unfortunetly not all the fencers were able to make the event. Two of the four teams did not have
three fencers. This meant that the final was between Bechtel and Las Vegas Valley Water District.
NV Engineers and Nellis had team members show and had volunteer fencers from Red Rock fill in for
missing people so everyone could fence but those bouts were not considered official since they were
missing members. In the end Las Vegas Valley Water District took the victory and for this year they
are the undisputed All-Division winners.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS AND ALL WHO PARTICIPATED.
